Where to Go Scouting Guide

The Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail is a linear state park located in eastern Kentucky. It consists of two segments of trail: the Birch Knob Section and the Highland Section. The Highland Section and the Little Shepherd Trail are linked at one end, and it is possible to continue hiking on this trail. The total length of all three trails is 82 miles, and three shelters are available (one on the Little Shepherd Trail and two on the Highland Section). The Little Shepherd Trail is actually a blacktop road atop a ridge, and is open to hikers, ATV’s, and vehicles. These sections are only part of what will be a 120 mile trail in eastern Kentucky.
